Adam’s Journey: Strength Beyond the Gym

Adam’s journey at Civic Reserve Recreation Centre is a powerful example of determination, resilience and the positive impact of an active and supportive community.

Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) at just 13 years old in 1994, Adam spent many years living a largely inactive lifestyle. In 2025, he decided it was time for a change and joined Civic Reserve Recreation Centre.

What began as a new challenge quickly became something Adam genuinely enjoyed. He was pleasantly surprised by how accessible the gym equipment was and as his confidence grew, so did his passion for training. The encouragement of fellow members and support from instructors Jackson and Nigel have played an important role in keeping him motivated.

Today, Adam regularly participates in Connect30, completing both Aerobic and Functional sessions each week while continuing to work towards new fitness goals.

One of Adam’s proudest achievements has been the improvement in his upper-body strength. When he first started, he could hold a dead hang for just three seconds. Through consistent training, he can now hold one for an incredible 40 seconds, with his sights firmly set on achieving a pull-up and chin-up.

Adam’s hard work has also seen him win the monthly Myzone Points Challenge twice and he’s already working towards making it three!

But for Adam, his journey has become about much more than physical progress. The people he trains alongside have become great friends, creating a sense of community that continues to motivate him each week.

Adam’s story is a fantastic reminder of what can be achieved through consistency, perseverance and the support of those around you.

We’re incredibly proud to have Adam as part of the Civic Reserve community and can’t wait to see what he achieves next!
