World Mental Health Day 2026: Real Voices, Reach Change
Saturday 10 October is World Mental Health Day, a global awareness day dedicated to promoting mental health, reducing stigma and encouraging meaningful conversations about wellbeing. This year’s theme, “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change,” highlights the importance of listening to people with lived experience of mental health challenges and ensuring their voices help shape positive change. World Mental Health Day 2026 – Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change is part of a worldwide effort to raise awareness of mental health issues and mobilise support for mental wellbeing.
At Mornington Peninsula Shire Active, we see every day how movement, connection and community can positively impact mental wellbeing. Whether it’s joining a group fitness class, swimming laps, attending an exercise program or simply taking time out for yourself, physical activity can play a valuable role in supporting both mind and body.
The Link Between Physical Activity and Mental Wellbeing
Life can be busy and demanding. Work, family commitments, study, financial pressures and everyday stresses can all take a toll on our mental health. While exercise isn’t a cure for mental health conditions, research consistently shows that regular physical activity can help improve mood, reduce stress and support overall wellbeing.
When we move our bodies, the brain releases chemicals that help promote positive feelings and reduce the effects of stress. Regular exercise has also been linked to:
• Reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression
• Improved sleep quality
• Increased energy levels
• Better concentration and cognitive function
• Greater resilience to everyday challenges
• Improved self-confidence and self-esteem
Physical activity doesn’t have to be intense or time-consuming to make a difference. A walk with a friend, a swim in the pool, a gym workout or participating in a group exercise class can all contribute to better mental wellbeing.
Every Voice Matters
The theme for this year’s World Mental Health Day reminds us that every person’s experience is unique. By listening to and learning from people with lived experience, we can create more inclusive, supportive communities where individuals feel understood and empowered to seek help when needed. World Mental Health Day aims to encourage conversations about mental health and highlight the importance of making support accessible for everyone.
Creating positive change often starts with small actions. Checking in with a friend, starting a conversation, joining a community activity or seeking support when you’re struggling can all make a meaningful difference.
How Exercise Physiology Can Help
For some people, knowing where to start can be the biggest challenge.
Our Accredited Exercise Physiologists (EPs) are university-qualified allied health professionals who specialise in using exercise to improve health, wellbeing and quality of life. They work with people of all ages and abilities and can provide tailored programs that take individual circumstances, goals and health conditions into account.
Exercise Physiology can support people experiencing:
• Stress and burnout
• Anxiety and depression
• Chronic health conditions
• Persistent pain
• Reduced mobility or confidence with exercise
• Recovery following illness or injury
An Exercise Physiologist can help you build a sustainable routine, develop confidence in movement and find activities that work for your lifestyle and wellbeing goals. Importantly, they provide guidance in a supportive and welcoming environment, helping you take manageable steps towards better health.
The Power of Community
Mental wellbeing is about more than exercise alone. Feeling connected to others, having a sense of belonging and participating in activities you enjoy can all support positive mental health outcomes.
Our centres are designed to be welcoming spaces where people can connect, move and feel supported. Whether you’re attending a class, meeting friends at the pool, participating in a community program or working towards personal fitness goals, you’re part of a community that values health and wellbeing.
Take a Step Towards Better Wellbeing
This World Mental Health Day, take a moment to reflect on your own wellbeing and the wellbeing of those around you. Small positive actions can have a lasting impact.
Consider making time for movement, reaching out to a friend, trying a new activity or speaking to a health professional if you need support. Every step counts, and every conversation matters.
If you’d like to learn how exercise can support your physical and mental wellbeing, speak with one of our Accredited Exercise Physiologists. Together, we can help you find a path to improved health, confidence and wellbeing.
World Mental Health Day is celebrated annually on 10 October to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and encourage action in support of mental wellbeing.
